Layer on the Stripes

Since 1961, stripes have been a staple for Sunbrella, and over the years, we have continued to reinvent this classic design. It’s no surprise that we have a wide variety of striped upholstery fabric, ranging from more nuanced takes to a classic cabana. Stripes provide stability to any space and can be dressed up or down. Step up to the style challenge and don’t be afraid to layer!

Timeless Classic

There is a reason that Sunbrella has been doing stripes for so long! From our classic bar stripe and vertical stripes to more unique color use, the stripe remains a constant. It’s a timeless style that complements many other designs and fabric patterns, from florals to solids. Sunbrella has developed collections throughout the years that have included stripes as an ode to the pattern that has always felt right “in-line” with the other fabrics in the collection. While stripes may be simple, they can work with any style and aesthetic.

When paired with complementary colors, stripes can be mixed with solids and patterns for a playful addition to your décor.

How to Layer Striped Fabric

Don’t be afraid to mix scale and color but do maintain a consistent element throughout. This can translate to keeping different stripe layouts in the same color family or layering different colored stripes with the same layout. Try adding in chevron or herringbone patterns or take a bolder approach with paisley and plaid.

Another style tip? Mix up colors when using the same colorway!

Stripes aren’t just limited to the classic cabana. Sunbrella offers creative takes, like Perception, a peacock-inspired pattern that provides a subtle stripe.

Stripes are more than just a classic cabana look. Designer Dabito chose to use Perception, a style reminiscent of a peacock feather for his outdoor sofa cushions.

While it might seem intimidating at first, you’ll look like a design pro when mixing stripes with patterns. The trick is simply to make sure the stripes and patterns are in the same color family. Check out how Sarah Vickers used this tip while styling her front porch.
