A boat represents a home away from home for most mariners, so why shouldn't your home on the water make a statement about your decorating taste similar to your landlocked residence? With this goal in mind, the makers of Sunbrella fabrics recently unveiled a mega-yacht makeover that demonstrates how performance fabrics can be used to express a personal sense of style both outside and inside a boat.
"Our goal for this project was to communicate to the marine industry that there are fabrics that are just as beautiful as those in the finest homes, yet are performance oriented and styled for boating," said Paige Mullis, a marine specialist with Sunbrella fabrics who guided the use of fabrics throughout the yacht. "These are fabrics that people want to live with whether they are on land or on water."
The mega-yacht transformed by this exterior and interior fabrics makeover is "Envision," a 110-foot Broward owned by RGF Environmental of West Palm Beach. RGF is using the vessel as a demonstration project for creating an environmentally friendly mega-yacht, and Sunbrella fabrics were selected for above and below deck.
Working closely with the owners of Envision, Sunbrella's marine specialist Paige Mullis, created a coordinated fabrics approach, above and below deck. The predominant color way is Spa and the overall decorating motif is tropical.
"The colors that we used on Envision are not typically associated with boating, but truly create an inviting environment and fulfill the owners' vision for their yacht," Paige said.
"Envision also includes fabric applications never before seen by the marine industry," Paige continued. "The main salon features Sunbrella fabrics for window shades, decorative pillows, table place settings, fabric wall coverings, decorative trims and upholstered cocktail tables that incorporate storage areas and can also be used as ottomans. We continue our Spa color theme throughout the yacht, while bringing in other decorative fabrics with tropical leaf patterns and splashes of color."
Visitors to Envision's master cabin experience the feel of the tropics through an elegantly decorated, monochromatic approach. White is predominant, with Sunbrella fabric textures and layering, including top of bed, making this cabin the most elegant on board.
"The plunge pool with its glass bottom is a very dramatic area of the boat, and we have incorporated wrap-around cushions in our Denali Spa pattern," Paige said. "The result is an inviting area with cool tropical colors where people will want to relax. It creates a nice flow of color and style throughout the boat."
More than 300 yards of Sunbrella fabric in more than 30 patterns have been used for exterior and interior decorating. All of the fabrics shown are available to the marine industry through two major distributors, The Astrup Company (High Point Collection) and John Boyle & Company (Premiere Marine Furniture Collection). Canvas Designers, Inc. of Riviera Beach, Fla. was responsible for fabric installations.
