Painting On Sunbrella

Since we’ve had several questions about painting on Sunbrella, thought I’d put the question out there and see what we got back. Our painter/expert responded with the following thoughts on painting on Sunbrella, particularly if using the art outside:

- wash the fabric with ammonia, dry and iron (I know we normally don’t suggest ironing Sunbrella but this is a special application)

- stretch the washed canvas over a wood frame mounted on luaun board pre-treated with spar varnish – this will protect the wood in an outside environment although our artist uses it to protect the canvas from any acids in the wood

- use a primer to cover the canvas

- after priming, paint with enamel paints and no further sealing or protecting is necessary for outdoor use

- our painter uses white canvas but doesn’t see why any color wouldn’t work

- uses regular canvas (not fire retardent because the stiffness is much harder to work with)

Our artist, Steven Seward, it turns out is quite the talent. This piece was painted on Sunbrella. We’re impressed!
