Glen Raven Custom Fabrics will introduce a new line of fire retardant awning fabrics during the IFAI Expo, replacing its current line of fire retardant fabrics, Sunbrella Firesist®.
The new product, Firesist® HUV, is woven using state-of-the-art fibers that are inherently fire retardant and texturized for a low luster natural canvas look. Firesist HUV also has a translucent matte coating on the under side of the fabric that dramatically increases hydrostatic resistance, eliminates fraying of cut edges, improves abrasion resistance and enhances sewing or welding.
"Firesist HUV is significantly stronger than Sunbrella Firesist, making it appropriate for larger commercial projects," said Doug Dubay, Glen Raven awning fabrics product manager. "Enhanced dimensional stability keeps Firesist HUV taut on awning frames through the full range of climatic conditions ensuring that awning projects maintain a smooth look regardless of temperature and humidity."
Glen Raven began a development program for a new fire retardant awning fabric after Solutia, the only manufacturer of fibers used in Sunbrella Firesist, exited the acrylic fiber market. The goal of this development program was creation of a product that would fill the need for a fire retardant fabric, while also offering improved performance characteristics.
"HUV stands for our Highly Ultra Violet (UV) resistant coloration process," Dubay said. "Glen Raven has combined the most advanced coloration technologies with proprietary in-house coloration to produce a fabric with excellent depth of color, consistent hue and the kind of UV resistance our customers demand.
"In addition to the HUV coloration process, Glen Raven is utilizing years of awning experience to apply a finish and coating that will enhance UV, stain, water and fire resistance, while also increasing ease of handling," he said.
Firesist HUV, which has been qualified for the Sunbrella Graphics System, comes with a limited five-year pro-rated warranty. The new fabric, initially introduced in 17 popular colors, will be available for delivery in November.
